FROM THE MOUNTAINS TO THE SEA: EXPLORING THE PROVINCE OF LUCCA BY FOLLOWING IN THE STEPS OF GIACOMO PUCCINI
The most performed composer in the world was born in Lucca, on December 22nd, 1858. Giacomo Puccini descended from a family of composers who made up the Lucca music tradition for about two centuries, together with other important musicians such as Francesco Gemignani, Luigi Boccherini and Alfredo Catalani. He lived in a house in Corte S. Lorenzo, in the core of the historic centre of Lucca, where he also attended the “G. Pacini” conservatory (today Luigi Boccherini), until he left for Milan to finish his studies.
Later on, Puccini went back to his motherland, while his operas were reaping honours in the most important Italian and foreign theatres. A lover of hunting, boats and cars, he found his music inspiration on the banks of the Massaciuccoli Lake, at Torre del Lago. The land in the Province of Lucca offered the Maestro lots of evocative elements (places, environments, and people): from the mountains at Celle di Pescaglia to the Versilia sea.
